What is involved
It may be a difficult decision to have counselling especially if this is your first time. This is understable and my role is to make you feel comfortable and guide you through the process. For counselling to be effective, building a relationship with a client is paramount. I aim to make you feel at ease to discuss openly the issues that cause you concern. In counselling, we will examine these issues from various angles and work together to help you find resolutions that work for you. But counselling is bigger than that. We can look at you and your life holistically, exploring beyond the issues you might bring to uncover meaning and significances as yet unknown to you. These revelations can help illuminate a pathway for you and give you the encouragement you need to make positive changes in your life. We will always go at your pace however, and only discuss what feels right for you in the moment, guided by your counselling goals.
My counselling approach
I am an integrative counsellor which simply means I integrate different psychotherapies tailored to the individual needs of my clients based on their unique personalities and experience. You may have heard of some of these therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic psychotherapy. Do not worry too much about what these titles mean, the key point is that they are proven tools that support positive mental health and wellbeing.
Underpinning my whole approach however, is that it is person-centred which recognises you as the expert of your own life. Counselling is not something that is "done" to you. It is a shared experience in which I bring my skills and you, your knowledge about your life up to that point. Working together we "find your path", building a vision for your life suited to your needs and interests, confidently knowing you're heading in the right direction.
